News From Texas A&M University
Aggie Astronaut Swanson Returns From Mission
When space shuttle Atlantis made its two-week voyage through space this month, an Aggie was on board for every phase of the journey. Steve Swanson '98 was part of the seven-member crew on NASA's most recent shuttle mission, officially named STS-117. The crew departed from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on June 8 with a mission to deliver equipment to the international space station. They landed safely and successfully on June 22 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Swanson earned his doctorate in computer science from Texas A&M and is the second Aggie within a year to travel into space. Mike Fossum '80 preceded him as part of space shuttle Discovery's STS-121 crew last July. For more on STS-117, go to www.nasa.gov.

Athletic Programs Complete Record-Setting Year
Aggie athletics experienced a record-setting year in 2006-2007, as seven different teams won Big 12 championships. The year concluded with the baseball team winning its first Big 12 tournament, while the softball team advanced to the Women's College World Series for the first time since 1988. Additionally, the women's outdoor track and field team won its first Big 12 title and placed fourth in the NCAA Track and Field Championships. The women's golf, swimming and diving, basketball, indoor track and field, and soccer teams also won Big 12 championships earlier in the year. For more, go to www.aggieathletics.com.

Research Projects Make Waves in Scientific Community, Media
Texas A&M has become a leading research institution, based on the more than $500 million research initiatives it annually supports and the widespread notoriety its researchers continue to generate. Texas A&M researchers have garnered a great deal of attention recently, as they have further explored the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and undertaken the deepest excavation effort ever attempted in the Gulf of Mexico, among other things. "Research is a fundamental part of our mission," said Richard Ewing, vice president of research, "and as evidenced by these high-profile projects, it is a fundamental part of our lives."
