The Association Celebrates Annual Fund, Begins New Campaign
After raising a record $6.67 million Annual Fund last year, The Association of Former Students is aiming to generate even more support for Texas A&M and Texas Aggies in 2007. In addition to receiving the personal benefits of Texas Aggie magazine and Online Directory access, your Century Club donation will also greatly benefit the entire Aggie Family in a variety of ways. Buck Weirus Spirit Award Applications Due Feb. 2
Each year, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award honors up to 55 students who demonstrate high involvement, create positive experiences throughout the Aggie community, impact student life at Texas A&M and enhance the Aggie Spirit. Unlike other university-wide awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make contributions to the university by participating in student organizations, fostering Aggie traditions and leading and managing university events. Applications are available on The Association of Former Students' Web site at http://www.AggieNetwork.com/BuckWeirus and must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. Four application workshops will be held to assist students with their applications. Aggie Ring Orders and Repairs Available
The Association of Former Students' Aggie Ring Program is currently taking Aggie Ring orders for qualified former students. Rings ordered by Feb. 9 will be delivered on April 13 at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. Rings may be ordered in person, by mail or by fax. The Aggie Ring Program can assist you with your Aggie Ring if it needs to be resized or repaired as well. Texas A&M Forms Presidential Search Committee
Dr. Michael D. McKinney, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, has appointed a 15-member search advisory committee to assist in identifying candidates for the position of president of Texas A&M University in College Station. Dr. Doug Slack, speaker of the university's faculty senate, will serve as the committee's chairman. The committee will state its recommendations to McKinney, who, in turn, will make his recommendations to the Board of Regents. It's estimated that the search process will take six to nine months. Baker Speaks at Bush Library Center
Former Secretary of State James A. Baker III looked back on his life in public service as he addressed an audience at the George Bush Presidential Library Center on Jan. 23. Baker's career in politics has spanned 30 years, during which time he has served in such notable positions as secretary of state, secretary of the treasury and White House chief of staff. Since March of last year, Baker and former U.S. Congressman Lee H. Hamilton have served as co-chairs of the bi-partisan Iraq Study Group. Baker's remarks were part of the Lenore and Francis Humphrys International Speakers Program, which seeks to bring world leaders and international affairs scholars to Texas A&M to spark dialogue on issues concerning the United States and the rest of the world. Registration Open for Black Former Student Caucus
Registration is now open for the Black Former Student Network (BFSN) Caucus, scheduled for Feb. 2-3 at Texas A&M University. The event will feature campus updates and briefings from administrators and university representatives with information on a variety of topics including recruitment, admissions, enrollment and retention, as well as academic affairs, student affairs, athletics and diversity. Aggie Baseball, Softball Teams Ready for Promising Seasons
The Texas A&M baseball and softball teams begin play early next month, and both squads are bringing high hopes into the 2007 season. The baseball team will begin the season at Olsen Field on Feb. 6 against Texas Southern. Their schedule includes 29 games against 12 different teams that played in the NCAA tournament last year, including defending national champion Oregon State. The softball team comes into the season ranked No. 13 in the nation and has been chosen as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 title. They open the season on Feb. 9 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, and will play their first home game on Feb. 16 against Arkansas. For more on this story, go to www.aggieathletics.com.
