Fredericksburg Attraction - German Heritage, Texas Hospitality

For a small town of 9,300, Fredericksburg has an astonishing number of things to see & do. There are 80 points of historical significance in the downtown Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Restaurants, museums, landmarks, galleries, antique malls & specialty shops abound up and down Main Street (aka Highways 290 & 87) that run concurrently through the middle of the District. The list below is a mere sample of attractions that might pique your interest.

National Museum of the Pacific War, formerly known as the Admiral Nimitz Museum. Instead of a mere display of old war artifacts you will see an interactive museum that will excite even those not fond of military history. An expansion program is underway to triple the size, including a fully restored PT-boat, a Japanese midget sub captured at Pearl Harbor, an American flag sewn together from parachutes by U.S. prisoners of war, a "fat man" atomic bomb casing and a letter home from a serviceman that will touch your heart strings, along with 18,000 other items. Innovative displays include an interactive Guadalcanal’s Henderson Field and engaging walk-through dioramas.

Nimitz Hotel, established in 1847 by Charles Nimitz after a career on the riverboats was popular from the beginning. He was a genial host and the register bears the names of many notables of the time. The hotel was managed, expanded and maintained by his heirs and is a famous landmark. It has been undergoing a major renovation for the past several months and parts of the hotel will likely be closed while we are there. Admiral Chester Nimitz was a descendent.

Wildseed Farms Market Center, 7 miles east on Hiway 290, is the largest working wildflower farm in the United States and is billed as a spectacular experience with Mother Nature and a shopping paradise. The Center features wildflower seeds, live plants, beautiful gifts, ladies apparel, specialty foods, biergarten, walking trails and, yum, peach ice cream.

Pioneer Museum/Gillespie County Historical Society, 309 W. San Antonio St. The museum, covering most of a city block, probably has more square footage of exhibit space than any other small-town museum in Texas. It includes an exact replica of the first church built in Fredericksburg, four pioneer dwellings, a school, a bath-house and a barn dating from 1847. The story the museum tells is the persistence of German culture in the Hill Country. The buildings are crammed with "stuff" that has been piling up in the society’s collection for the past 70 years, such as rifles made by a local gunsmith, embroidered silk banners carried by singing societies, cooking utensils from Germany, et al.

LBJ State Park & Historic Site, 16 miles east, near Stonewall (pop. 487), where you can explore the history & artifacts of Indian, German, Spanish & Mexican cultures. Visitor centers, bus tours, picnic areas, etc. LBJ National Historic Park has two districts. One is also near Stonewall, along the north side of HW 290, that spans both sides of the Pedernales River, where the LBJ ranch is situated. The other is on the south side of Johnson City, about 15 miles east.

Friedhelm’s Bavarian Inn, 905 West Main St. The menu features Bavarian specialties, great steaks and seafood. Probably the best restaurant in Fredericksburg.

Peach Tree Tea Room, 210 South Adams. Gourmet food & shopping. Lunch 11:00-2.30, reservations recommended. Shopping 9:30-5:30. Phone 830-997-9527 or online at www.peachtree.com.

Rather Sweet Bakery & Café, 249 East Main. Wonderful baked goods & sandwiches.

Cotton Gin Seafood & Steak Kitchen, 1.5 miles south of Main on Highway 16. Lunch buffet feast, decadent desserts & full bar. Great atmosphere.

Cottage Cafe, 232 West Main. Quaint restaurant, reminiscent of a Tuscany bistro. Tantalizing food, incredible desserts, professional staff.

Engel’s Deli, 220 East Main. Lunch 10:30-4:00. Deli & fast food. Located by the Nimitz Museum.

Mamacita’s Restaurant & Cantina, 506 East Main. Fredericksburg Brewing Co., 245 East Main. Home-brew, German food & live music. Also steaks, seafood, sandwiches & more.

There are seven wineries currently open. Viticulture is the fastest growing agriculture industry in the area. Here are four:

Fredericksburg Winery, located downtown at 247 W. Main has its own vineyards. Free tastings daily of 14 to 16 releases from dry to dessert wines, sold exclusively in the winery. Named one of the top three Texas wineries by USA Today. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Becker Vineyards, Highway 290 East, 11 miles off Jenschke Lane.

Vineyard, winery and the largest underground wine cellar in Texas. Hours 10 AM to 5 PM. Call 830-644-2681 for directions if needed.

Texas Vineyards & Beyond, 329½ East Main. Wine tasting rooms with Texas & imported wines.

Bell Mountain Vineyards, 16 miles north of town, the largest vineyard in the area offers tastings & a chance to see wine making from planting to fermentation & marketing. It was established in 1986. The area was the first wine-growing appelation in Texas.

Luckenbach, population 25, is a tiny community near Fredericksburg where everybody’s somebody, located 6 miles east on HW 290, then south 4.6 miles on RR 1376. The activity centers around a general store (built 1849), beer joint & (they say, modestly) the best dance hall in Texas, on 10 acres surrounded by huge oak trees between two creeks. The sign behind the bar reads "If you’re drinking to forget, please pay in advance." Reportedly, on most afternoons & evenings, pickers play & sing under the trees. Some Wednesdays there are jam sessions from 1:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Der Alte Fritz, German & American antiques and collectibles. 409 East Main St.

Lone Star Antiques Mall, 905 East Main, 25 quality dealers offer a wide variety of unique items from the hill country & elsewhere.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, 16710 RR 965, 17 miles north of Fredericksburg. "The most famous rock in Texas is a dome of pink granite, 425 feet high, that is the same used for the Texas Capitol. It caps a solid mass of 100 square miles just under the surface. Indian tribes regarded the rock in different ways, some believed it was sacred, others thought it was haunted. This was fearsome because of the popping and booming sounds the rock often makes as the granite cools and contracts at night. Sometimes there are blue sparks as the massive sections shift."

Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, three miles south on HW 16 features a beautiful 18 hole golf course, nature trails and a live oak wilderness. The golf course is 18 holes, 72 par, 6,432 yards. The tree-lined fairways are home to some of the most beautiful oak trees in Texas. The front nine has 4 holes that cross over Live Oak Creek. The back nine has three lakes that come into play on five holes. Call the pro shop for tee-times, toll free 800-950-8147. According to the website, the course is closed Monday mornings.
