JoAlan Spears
Lt. Col. (Ret.) JoAlan Spears, 96, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012, in Bowie, Texas.

Graveside services are pending at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana, Texas under the direction of The White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

There is no scheduled visitation.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Bowie Hospice of Rural Texas, 705 E. Greenwood Ave., Bowie, Texas 76230.

Arrangements are entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

Spears was born April 3, 1915 in Childress, Texas to J. A. Spears and Ruby Cass Spears. He was a 1933 graduate of Bowie High School class and a 1937 graduate of Texas A & M University College Station a degree in petroleum engineering. He married Viviene Evetts on Nov. 4, 1939. On December 30, 1940 he was called to active duty and served in the U.S. Army, European Theater, until his discharge in 1945. Upon his discharge, he joined the Texas National Guard. He operated Sinclair Petroleum in Bowie for several years before he was recalled to active duty in 1961 for the Berlin Crisis. He retired from the guard in 1975.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.A. and Ruby Spears, and wife, Viviene Spears.

Spears is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Blackmon and husband, George, of Bowie and Dottie Clower and husband, Tim of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren Alan Blackmon and wife, Michelle of Huntsville, Alabama, David Blackmon of Bowie, George Clower and wife, Kate, John Clower, and Jill Clower all of Corpus Christi, and Jennifer Vargas and husband, Paul of Houston; nine great-grandchildren; and niece, Beth Fulp of Bowie.
