The Association of Former Students is pleased to introduce our 2009 Board of Directors, elected during the November 8, 2008 meeting of The Association’s Leadership Council. During this meeting the Leadership Council approved a change to the organization’s Bylaws, altering the nomenclature of both volunteer and professional titles within The Association’s organizational structure.
Effective January 1, 2009, the title of the elected volunteer leader of The Association changed from President to Chair of the Board of Directors. Likewise, the President Elect is now known as the Chair Elect and the Immediate Past President is recognized as the Past Chair. For 2009, Shelley Potter ’78, of Dallas, serves as Chair, while Shariq Yosufzai ’74, of Oakland, CA, and General Hal Hornburg (USAF, RET)’68, of Fair Oaks Ranch, serve as Chair Elect and Past Chair, respectively.
Porter S. Garner III ’79 remains in the top professional leadership role within the organization, a post he has held since 2000, and serves as a non-voting member of the Board. His position, known as the Executive Secretary from 1923 until 1968 and as Executive Director through 2008, is now changed to President and Chief Executive Officer.
Joining Potter, Yosufzai, Hornburg, and Garner on the Board are the following Directors:

As a result of the Bylaws amendment, titles for other members of The Association’s professional management team have changed, as well. Kathryn Greenwade ’88, Cecilee Herd ’95, Marty Holmes ’87, and Barbara Kasper ’82, each serve as Vice Presidents, while Ron Spies ’73 fills the role of Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Greenwade leads The Association’s communications and human resources functions, with Herd directing administrative and communications-related initiatives for the President’s office and the Board of Directors. Holmes has oversight for the marketing, fundraising, and programs areas for The Association and Kasper directs the capital fundraising efforts for the organization. Spies leads the accounting, information technology, information services, facilities and production teams for the Association.
The approved Bylaws changes were initiated by Immediate Past Chair General Hal Hornburg’68 who appointed a committee in 2008, led by Past Chair Bill Flores ’76, to study the organization’s Bylaws and recommend needed changes. The committee, consisting of Board members Arno Krebs ’64 and Otway Denny ’71, Past Presidents Weldon Kruger ’53 and Chuck Ellison ’76, Class Agent Amelia Folkes ’96, and Dallas A&M Club President Patrick Williams ’92 recommended the changes in nomenclature to make The Association’s leadership titles more reflective of current business practices and more consistent with those of Texas A&M University and organizations such as the Texas A&M Foundation and 12th Man Foundation.
