News from Texas A&M University
The committee to select a new Aggie mascot released an update in May. Though
they have yet to recommend a breed to replace Reveille VII, who retired at the
end of the spring semester, the committee outlined behavioral and physical
characteristics that the new dog should have. The University is seeking a dog
that is medium to large in
size and healthy with an outgoing personality. The chosen dog should like people, be
at ease in crowds and not afraid of noise nor be highly reactive. The dog should
be mature, about 1 year old or older. It should be female with a collie-like appearance.
It should also be a service dog with the "physical attributes and noble appearance"
consistent with the role of the University mascot, "not unlike a Golden Retriever."

Texas A&M Qatar held its first commencement May 15, graduating 30 students with
degrees in chemical, electrical, mechanical and petroleum engineering. A representative
from The Association of Former Students made the trip to induct Qatar’s graduates
into The Association as former students. The Class of 2008 is comprised of 16 female
and 14 male students. Fourteen are Qataris, with the remaining 26 graduates from
Egypt, France, Iran, India, Lebanon, Syria, U.S. and Yemen. The coursework completed
by TAMUQ students is almost identical to classes offered at TAMU’s main campus.
“Our faculty is proud to teach such a promising group of students, knowing these
engineers will one day impact the Middle East and the rest of the world in significant
ways,” said TAMUQ Dean and CEO Mark Weichold '78.

The Association Of Former Students Welcomes New Former Students
A record five commencement ceremonies were held May 9-10 to award more than 5,500
undergraduate and graduate degrees. The previous record was set last spring when
5,417 students received degrees. This year, officials estimate that with a seating
total of about 12,000 in Reed Arena, approximately 60,000 people passed through
the facility during the two days of ceremonies. Not only was this year’s commencement
the largest, it was a first for Dr. Elsa Murano in her position as University president.

a way to welcome Aggies, current and former students, back to campus at the start
of a new school year. It is planned for the weekend of the first home football game.
This year, Texas A&M will line up against Arkansas State at 6 p.m. Aug. 30. For
