The Association, Texas A&M Announce 2008 Distinguished Alumni
Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students are proud to announce the recipients of the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award: Charles H. "Charlie" Weinbaum, Jr. '47 of Beaumont; James D. "Doug" Pitcock, Jr. '49 of Houston; Arthur R. "Artie" McFerrin, Jr. '65 of Kingwood, and Neal W. Adams '68 of Euless. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a former student of Texas A&M University. The award recognizes outstanding Aggies who have made significant contributions within their professions, communities and significant contributions to Texas A&M. 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award Honors 24
Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students awarded 24 faculty and staff members with the 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award. The award celebrates faculty and staff members who exhibit the highest standards of excellence at Texas A&M. Since its start in 1955, the award has been presented to 834 professionals. This year's recipients come from various colleges and departments, all with different jobs and responsibilities. Aggie Muster
On April 21, thousands of current and former students joined together to remember and celebrate the lives of Aggies who passed away during previous year. From College Station to China, more than 300 Musters were held worldwide on the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. This year's speaker at campus Muster held in Reed Arena was Dr. John A. Adams '73, author of "We Are the Aggies," "Softly Call the Muster" and "Keepers of the Spirit." University President Elsa Murano, along with Student Body President Conner Prochaska '07 and The Association of Former Students President General Hal M. "The Next Tradition" Graduation Party
"The Next Tradition" graduation party, hosted by The Association of Former Students, will be held at the Student Recreation Center in the Archery Room May 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Association invites all graduates and their family and friends to stop by to enjoy free hamburgers and lots of door prizes. This is a great opportunity for new grads to learn about their next tradition—being a former student! Graduates, come learn about The Aggie Network, pick up a window decal and join the Century Club. 2008 Coach's Nights With Mike Sherman
The Association partnered with the 12th Man Foundation and local A&M Clubs to take Texas A&M Head Football Coach Mike Sherman on a tour across Texas. He is planning a great season for the Aggies and wants to tell you all about it. The 2008 tour of Coach's Nights starts July 27 in San Antonio and will continue throughout the summer. TAMU-Qatar Students Receive Aggie Rings
Thirty-five Aggies at Texas A&M University at Qatar received their Aggie Rings April 17 at a ceremony in Doha, Qatar. April's ring delivery was the largest to date in Doha and it brings the total number of Aggie Rings presented at Texas A&M at Qatar to more than 70.

Aggie Band Announces Drum Majors
Corps of Cadets Elliot Stump '09, Adam Broussard '09 and Samantha Kropp '09 will lead the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band next year—Stump as the combined band drum major, Broussard as the infantry drum major and Kropp as the artillery drum major. Kropp's selection marks a first for females. Never before has a woman led the band as a drum major. Drum major candidates go through a rigorous selection process that considers their experience and contributions to the band as well as their command presence, integrity, respect among their fellow bandsmen and how they represent themselves, the Corps of Cadets and the Aggie Band. Largest Class In History To Graduate May 9-10
A record five commencement ceremonies will be held in May to award more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate degrees. Graduation is May 9-10 at Reed Arena. A separate ceremony May 8 will award about 128 doctor of veterinary medicine degrees at Rudder Auditorium. Murano On "Texas Monthly Talks"
Texas A&M President Elsa Murano was featured on the PBS television show "Texas Monthly Talks" April 13. During the program hosted by Texas Monthly Editor Evan Smith, Murano discussed Aggieland—its traditions, standard of education and future—along with what it is like to be the first woman and first Hispanic president of Texas A&M. Engineering Graduate Program And Bush School Ranked In U.S. News & World Report
Texas A&M Engineering's graduate program ranked 13th overall and 7th among public institutions in the latest U.S. News & World Report survey, "America's Best Graduate Schools 2009." In a separate listing, the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest ranking for graduate programs in public affairs. The Bush School's rankings, conducted in fall 2007, considered the national reputation of the public affairs programs at 201 public schools. Since the Bush School's start 1997, enrollment has jumped from 12 students to 160 full-time degree students and another 350 enrolled through extended education certificate programs. Aggie On "American Idol"
Jason Castro '09, a 21-year-old construction science major from Rockwall, is one of the top five contestants on the top-ranking television show "American Idol." In one of Castro's early performances, he told viewers of his Aggie roots and whooped. Former and current students have joined to support their fellow Ag through watch parties and Web sites and have placed votes to pushing him into the next round. "American Idol" is a reality television show and contest to find the best young singer in the country. The winner is chosen through nationwide auditions and public vote. Every week viewers call and vote for their favorite singer. "American Idol" airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. CDT, and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. CDT on FOX.

TAMU Recognizes And Applauds Student Employees
Student workers Alison Sullins '08 and Meagan Martinez, graduate student, were named Texas A&M's student employees of the year. Both received a $2,000 scholarships sponsored by The Association of Former Students. Sullins received her award for working in the community as a childcare worker, and Martinez was recognized for her work on campus as a student worker in the office of the Faculty Senate. They were honored at the 10th Annual Student Employees of the Year ceremony April 17, which was hosted by Scholarships & Financial Aid. Martinez and Sullins were chosen out of 41 nominated employees both on and off campus.

Texas A&M Golf Course Annual Golf Classic
Registration is now open for Texas A&M Golf Course's 36th Annual Golf Classic set for May 16-17. The $150 entry fee ($95 for current Texas A&M students) includes green fees, cart fees, range balls for two days, hat, contest holes, lunch Friday, breakfast and lunch Saturday, and awards.
