Texas A&M, The Association Offer Aid to Hurricane Victims
Following the devastation brought about by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Texas A&M and The Association of Former Students undertook special efforts to aid the countless individuals affected by the storm. Texas A&M University President Dr. Robert M. Gates announced that the school would accept up to 1,000 students for as long as one year from universities and colleges unable to offer classes this fall due to Katrina. In addition, the university made Reed Arena available as a temporary shelter for more than 200 New Orleans evacuees. The Association of Former Students utilized its most powerful resource, the Aggie Network, by setting up an online forum and call center for Aggies to connect with each other in the wake of the storms. Those Aggies affected by the hurricanes can post their needs online, giving others the opportunity respond. To view and utilize the forums, go to www.AggieNetwork.com/HurricaneSupport&z=8.

Gates Announces $275 Million Construction Program
An unprecedented construction program with a total estimated cost of about $275 million will soon be under way at Texas A&M, financed in part by The Texas A&M University System and a major private gift, announced University President Dr. Robert M. Gates, September 9 at the school's annual academic convocation. "These investments will not only significantly enhance science and engineering research and teaching at Texas A&M, but will firmly establish us as a leader nationally in these critical areas so essential for America's future growth, prosperity and competitiveness," noted Gates in his state-of-the-university address. The program, he explained, will result in four major new academic buildings, including a Life Sciences Complex at a cost of nearly $100 million and a $50 million Emerging Technologies Building, which will house the Look College of Engineering and its research partners.
