Gates Appointed to FBI National Security Higher Education Board
University President Dr. Robert M. Gates has been appointed by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III to serve on the newly created National Security Higher Education Advisory Board. Mueller said the board, made up of presidents and chancellors of 16 prominent U.S. universities, is designed to foster outreach and promote understanding between higher education and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "The board will provide advice on the culture of higher education, including the traditions of openness, academic freedom and international collaboration," Mueller noted. "Primetime" Probes A&M's Nuclear Reactor
In an October 13 episode, ABC's "Primetime" program examined the role and safety of nuclear reactors on college campuses throughout the country, including the one at Texas A&M. Upon viewing the show, A&M officials including President Robert M. Gates and Dan Reece, director of the Nuclear Science Center, appeared to be unshaken by what was portrayed. ABC gathered information and footage for the program this summer by having interns pose as visitors to participate in a routine tour. The 1-megawatt reactor has been used by Texas A&M's nuclear engineering department for research since 1961, during which time no safety concerns have been reported.
