Preparations Underway for Distinguished Alumni Gala
The Association will honor the 2005 Distinguished Alumni of Texas A&M University when it hosts the Distinguished Alumni Gala on Friday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Duncan Dining Hall. This year's inductees are The Honorable Willie E.B. Blackmon '73, Jerry S. Cox '72, Melbern G. Glasscock '59, Billy Pete Huddleston '56, Edward F. Kruse '49 and James K.B. Nelson '49. Houston Aggies Host Coach Fran
Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione will be speaking to the Touchdown Club of Houston at noon on Wednesday, August 3 in the J.W. Marriot in the Galleria. Coach Fran will be commenting on the Aggies' upcoming season as well as showing a series of video highlights of last season's team. Association's Annual Fund Climbs to $3.36 Million
With the continued support of former students and friends of A&M, The Association's 2005 Annual Fund total has risen to $3,365,078.38. These donations enable The Association to have a sustaining impact on Texas A&M University and the worldwide Aggie Network. Yell Leaders Present Seventh Annual First Yell
The Texas Aggie Yell Leaders have announced that the seventh annual First Yell will be held September 16-17 in conjunction with the Texas A&M football game against Southern Methodist University. The featured event of the weekend will be a performance by comedian Bill Engvall on Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m. in Reed Arena. Engvall co-stars with Jeff Foxworthy on the WB network comedy show "Blue Collar TV" and will be making his third appearance at First Yell. Engvall also performed at the debut First Yell in 1999 and later appeared with Foxworthy in 2001. Opening the show for Engvall will be rising comedic star Jamie Kaler as well as the Singing Cadets, Aggie Wranglers and Percussion Studio. G. Rollie White Plaza Undergoing Renovation
The plaza in front of G. Rollie White Coliseum is currently being remodeled and is expected to be completed by September. Once finished, the result will be an extension of the existing plaza behind the north end zone of Kyle Field. The area will include all-new concrete, landscaping and a series of commemorative A&M plaques. The renovation effort is a Class gift from the Class of 2005, which is contributing approximately one-third of the total $245,000 cost of the project. For more on this story, click here.

Transportation Services Announces Game-Day Parking Options
Transportation Services is now offering additional options for parking during Aggie home football games. Those fans without reserved 12th Man parking spots can now buy a season parking pass for $60, allowing the purchaser to park in designated areas near Kyle Field. Also, permits for the RV football lot near Reed Arena are $60 per weekend and must be purchased online at http://transport.tamu.edu/specialevents/rvfootball.aspx.

London Fire Brigade Trained At Texas A&M-Based Disaster City
Urban search and rescue personnel from the London Fire Brigade relied on training received at the Texas Engineering Extension Service's (TEEX) Disaster City in their response to the recent terrorist attacks. TEEX, a member of The Texas A&M University System, has trained 178 urban search and rescue specialists from the London Fire Brigade at Disaster City in a partnership that dates back to June 2003. Fourteen classes have been conducted at Disaster City for 652 search and rescue specialists from throughout the United Kingdom. London Fire Brigade Commissioner Ken Knight attributed his agency's preparedness to the urban search and rescue training received at Texas A&M and Disaster City during a press conference that aired on national media, including CNN. Ewing Receives Humboldt Research Award
Richard E. Ewing, vice president for research at Texas A&M University, has received a Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Berlin, Germany. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually to scientists and scholars from abroad with internationally recognized academic qualifications. The research award honors the academic achievements of the award winner's lifetime. Furthermore, award winners are invited to Germany to conduct research projects of their choosing. A&M Offering Test Prep Courses
The Texas A&M Office of Continuing Education and Public Outreach is now offering preparatory courses for both the GRE and GMAT exams. Each is a two-day course, with the GRE costing $495 and the GMAT offered at a price of $595. The courses will provide small class sizes, experienced instructors and follow-up test prep support. Endowment Created to Aid Victims of Terror Attacks
With the support of the Texas A&M Foundation, Bob Peterson '83 has established the Heroes of the War on Terrorism Memorial Endowed Opportunity Award Scholarship. The endowment was created with the purpose of honoring all those who have lost their lives in the war on terror and providing support to their surviving family members. This effort is especially focused on helping the survivors of those service members killed since September 11, 2001. Recipients of any scholarships provided by the fund will be full-time students in good standing, pursuing a degree from Texas A&M University in College Station. The overall objective is to make the Endowed Opportunity Award viable no later than June 2010 by obtaining the qualifying $25,000 minimum level for a continuing endowment. 2005 A&M Volleyball Schedule Announced
The 2005 season figures to be a challenging one for the Texas A&M volleyball team. Fifteen of the Aggies' 29 matches will be against teams that advanced to the 2004 NCAA tournament, while seven contests will be against teams that ranked in the final top 15. A&M will begin its quest for the first Big 12 Conference title in school history when they take on Kansas in Lawrence on September 14. The Aggies will open up conference play at home on September 16 against Missouri -- the team who tied A&M for third place in the conference last season. Accelerate Online Program Adds New Certification Options
The eEducation Group and Continuing Education & Public Outreach office in the College of Education and Human Development are proud to announce new online alternative teacher certification options. The Accelerate Online Program, which currently certifies secondary science and mathematics teachers, is expanding to include secondary certification in history, social studies and english language arts.
