2006 Annual Fund Campaign Kicks Off
This Valentine's Day, show your special Aggie just how much you care by making a gift to the Annual Fund in his or her name. Buck Weirus Spirit Award Applications Now Available
Each year, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award is presented to 55 students who demonstrate high involvement, create positive experiences throughout the Aggie community, impact student life at Texas A&M and enhance the Aggie Spirit. Unlike other university-wide awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make contributions to the university by participating in student organizations, fostering Aggie traditions and leading and managing university events. Applications are available on The Association of Former Students' Web site at http://www.AggieNetwork.com/BuckWeirus and must be submitted by Friday, February 3, at 5 p.m. Four application workshops will be held to assist students with their applications. Maroon Out the Riverwalk June 15-18
From June 15-18 the Aggie Network will attempt to "maroon out" the Riverwalk with the first All Aggie Family Reunion in San Antonio. All Aggies and friends of Texas A&M are invited to bring their families and reconnect with their Aggie friends while enjoying some of Texas' favorite family vacation destinations. Enjoy the Alamo City's many recreation venues with your family, then get together on Friday and Saturday evening for a family friendly dance on the Riverwalk, including great music, entertainment for the kids and good food. Association Welcomes New Grads with "The Next Tradition"
The Association of Former Students hosted more than 600 December graduates plus their friends and family at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center on December 14, 2005, for "The Next Tradition" (TNT) graduation party. Texas A&M's newest former students were treated to fajitas, door prizes and a chance to meet with Career Center and A&M Club representatives. December Commencement Ceremonies Honor 3,567 Graduates
Degrees were bestowed upon 3,567 Texas A&M University graduates during three commencement ceremonies at Reed Arena on December 16-17, 2005. Commencement speakers were Former First Lady Barbara Bush, Gov. Rick Perry and National Academy of Engineering President William A. Wulf. Apple Computer Features TAMUQ as "An Oasis of Learning"
The joint research computing work between Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Department of Chemical Engineering has been featured in a case study by Apple Computer. The article appears in the higher education "Profiles in Success" section. To support the research and computational needs of Texas A&M's engineering students, the school's information technology team has created a new supercomputer that is now one of the most powerful systems of its kind in the world. Accounting Programs Ranked in Top 10 by Public Accounting Reports
Texas A&M's accounting graduate and undergraduate programs at Mays Business School placed among the top 10 programs in the nation in the Public Accounting Report's 2005 rankings. The undergraduate program ranked 7th, up from 13th in 2004, and the graduate program moved to 8th from its 10th place spot last year. The rankings are based on an annual survey of accounting professors. Other programs in the top 10 for both undergraduate and graduate programs included Brigham Young, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern California and Texas. Darnell Named Defensive Coordinator
On December 16, 2005, it was announced that Gary Darnell was hired as the new defensive coordinator of the Texas A&M football team. Darnell, 57, most recently served as head coach at Western Michigan University from 1997-2004. Prior to that Darnell served as defensive coordinator at Texas, Notre Dame, Florida, Wake Forest and Kansas State. Stark Gallery Presents Miniature Worlds Exhibit
The J. Wayne Stark Gallery will open its new exhibit, Miniature Worlds: Art from India, in the Memorial Student Center on January 19. The exhibit will feature paintings, drawings, sculptures and illustrated manuscripts, spanning 400 years of Indian history. It will be on display through March 5. Dat Nguyen '98 to Appear at San Antonio Aggie Moms' Event
Former Texas A&M football player Dat Nguyen '98 will appear as the guest speaker for the San Antonio Texas A&M University Mothers' Club fundraiser, Celebrating the Human Spirit, on Friday, February 24. Nguyen, who helped lead the Aggies to the 1998 Big 12 Championship and currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys, will be on hand to discuss his new book, Dat: Tackling, Life and the NFL. The fundraising luncheon will be held at Sunset Station in San Antonio at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit scholarships and direct services to students attending Texas A&M in College Station. African-American Summit Planned for February 9-11
The 2006 Texas A&M African-American Summit, co-sponsored by the university and the Black Former Student Network, is scheduled for Thursday, February 9 through Saturday, February 11, in College Station. The summit's primary focus will be to discuss and develop a strategic plan for the recruitment, retention and recognition of African Americans at Texas A&M. The Summit will open with a reception Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. Friday's events are scheduled at the University Center beginning at 8 a.m. and include plenary sessions, working sessions, a luncheon, an evening reception and fundraiser. Featured speakers will include Bill Jones '81, vice chair of the Board of Regents, and Dr. Robert M. Gates, president of Texas A&M. The summit will close Saturday with events that include private socials and receptions, an athletic forum, campus tours, current student lunch, a Q&A session and an evening reception and fundraiser. Austin Aggie Moms' Club Presents Singing Cadets
The Austin Texas A&M University Mothers' Club is proud to present the Texas A&M Singing Cadets in a concert on January 21 at 7 p.m. at the Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin. The Singing Cadets, known around the world as the "Voice of Aggieland," are comprised of 70 young men and are in the midst of their 101st touring season. Tickets for the event are $10, with profits funding scholarships to Austin area Aggies. For further information, go to http://www.austinaggiemoms.org/singingcadets.html.

Central America Aggie Summit Takes Place February 16-19
Texas A&M University and the A&M Clubs from Central America will host the Central American Aggie Summit from February 16-19. The main objectives of the summit include reuniting Aggies from Central America and providing tips from university administrators on how to successfully apply to Texas A&M. In addition, participants will discuss and analyze the economic impact of the Central American and Panama Free Trade Agreements as well as the region's social vulnerability to natural disasters, hazard reduction and recovery. Attendants will include Texas A&M administration and faculty members and representatives from The Association of Former Students. Ol' Army Cycling Team Recruiting Riders for Benefit Cause
The Ol' Army Cycling Team, comprised of beginning and experienced cyclists, is recruiting participants who would like to represent Texas A&M in the BP MS150 April 23-26, 2006. The event begins in Houston and continues for two days and 183 miles with stops in Bellville, LaGrange and Bastrop before ending in downtown Austin next to the State Capital. This promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience with Aggies of all backgrounds coming together for fun and a great cause. This is a popular event and registration will fill up early, so interested participants should sign-up quickly.
