The Association to Give Over $3 Million to A&M in 2005
Due to the generosity of thousands of former students, Aggie parents and friends of Texas A&M University, The Association of Former Students will provide more than $3.5 million in support to the university in 2005. These funds will be used to support scholarships, student organizations, faculty enrichment programs and much more. The Association would like to thank all of the class agents and club officers, who work year-round to strengthen the ties between former students and The Association, and our faithful supporters, who continuously give. We look forward to supporting Texas A&M University in 2005!

The Association Mourns the Loss of A.W. "Head" Davis Jr. '45,
Past Association President
The Association of Former Students lost a long-time friend and strong supporter in the passing of A.W. "Head" Davis Jr. '45 on January 13, 2005. He was 80. Over the course of his life, Davis served The Association of Former Students and Texas A&M in numerous capacities including stints as a member of the Board of Directors for The Association, President of The Association and Chairman of the Texas A&M University Foundation Board of Trustees. "Head Davis '45 was one of the finest Texas Aggies I have ever known," commented Porter S. Garner III '79, executive director of The Association of Former Students. "He had a profound love for Texas A&M and The Association of Former Students. I was most fortunate to know Head and enjoy his loyal and inspiring friendship. I already miss him." Aggies Instrumental in Relief Efforts for Tsunami Victims
Mike McGowan '90 has been working overtime lately in response to the devastating effects of the tsunami that swamped the Indian Ocean rim in December. As co-founder of a successful human resources consulting firm in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he resides, McGowan has witnessed first-hand the extreme areas of need and has gone to work to help meet those needs. Since the disaster, he has utilized his business connections to head up relief efforts in Aceh, the Indonesian province worst-hit by the tsunami. Together with his friend and co-founder, T. R. Sigit Mursidi '90, he strives to direct their funds and resources to the areas that need them most. McGowan and Mursidi's efforts have been funded through their own personal resources and through contributions from friends and fellow Aggies around the globe. Aggie 100 Program Seeking Nominations
Know a successful Aggie? Who doesn't? The Center for New Ventures and Entrepreneurship in cooperation with The Association is launching the Aggie 100, a program that finds these highflying companies and their Aggie leaders. Each year, Aggie 100 will identify, recognize and celebrate the 100 fastest growing Aggie-owned or managed businesses in the world. The 2005 Aggie 100 program will culminate with an awards celebration on campus in October, and winners will also be featured in the November 2005 issue of the Texas Aggie . Dates Announced for Aggie Hostel 2005
The Association is excited to announce June 5-10 as the dates for Aggie Hostel 2005. If you are an Aggie over 60 years of age, we invite you and your spouse to return to campus and reacquaint yourself with Aggieland. You will have the opportunity to attend insightful lectures by faculty members, get a behind-the-scenes view of programs at A&M, enjoy evening entertainment and of course, participate in great Aggie traditions. Super Bowl Commercial Produced by Aggie
While many will be enjoying Super Bowl coverage with friends and food on February 6, Mike Albrecht '82 will be intently watching Super Bowl commercials for one in particular--the one he helped design. As the vice president of Freed Advertising in Sugarland, Texas, Albrecht has worked with Cosentino USA on an extensive ad campaign that is spearheaded by the 30-second Super Bowl spot. The "I am Diana Pearl" commercial, which is an ad for Silestone quartz countertops, features Chicago Bears legends Mike Ditka, William "Refrigerator" Perry and Jim McMahon as well as basketball wild man Dennis Rodman.

The Association Announces Board of Directors for 2005
During their 2004 Fall Council Meeting, The Association of Former Students Leadership Council elected the 2005 Board of Directors. Richard Kardys '67 of San Antonio will serve as Association President for 2005 and Van Taylor '71 of Dallas will serve as President Elect. Charles A. (Chuck) Ellison '76 of College Station rounds out the Executive Committee as Immediate Past President. Included on the Board are newly elected Directors William (Bill) Mahomes, Jr. '69 of Dallas and S. Shariq Yosufzai '74 of Oakland, California. Aggie Band, Ross Volunteers Perform in Inaugural Parade
The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and the Ross Volunteers were on hand in Washington, D.C. January 20 where they marched in the second-term inaugural parade of President George W. Bush. The Ross Volunteers, along with Reveille VII, also made an appearance at the Texas State Society's Black Tie & Boots Ball which took place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel on January 19. The Ross Volunteers performed ceremonial duties and served as honor guard for the governor of Texas.

Former A&M President Vandiver Dies at 79
Texas A&M University President Emeritus Frank E. Vandiver passed away January 7 at his home in College Station. He was 79. Vandiver served as president of Texas A&M from 1981-1988 and later served as university distinguished professor and president emeritus. Vandiver was also regarded as a renowned historian and taught history at several institutions including Washington University in St. Louis, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Rice University and Oxford University. Head Men's Basketball Coach Gillispie Featured on Sports Illustrated Website
Aggie Head Men's Basketball Coach Billy Gillispie was recently interviewed and featured in a column on Sports Illustrated's website. The column, written by Stewart Mandel, is called "Extreme Makeover" and highlights Gillispie's success in turning around the A&M men's basketball program. The high point of the season thus far has been the Aggies' stunning 74-63 upset over No. 9 Texas on January 12 in front of a record crowd at Reed Arena. Currently, the Aggies are 13-3 overall. Aggie Named Rhodes Scholar 2005
Nicholas J. Anthis '05, a biochemistry major at Texas A&M University, has been chosen from among 904 applicants, who were endorsed by more than 340 colleges and universities, as a 2005 Rhodes Scholar. Sea Aggies Win Sloops Championship
The Texas A&M University at Galveston sailing team finished their 2004 fall season with a win at the 2004 Intercollegiate North American Sloop Championship. The regatta was hosted by the University of California at Irvine and was held in Newport Beach, California, at the Balboa Yacht Club. The team from the branch campus of Texas A&M shocked the collegiate racing world with their win. A sloop is a three-person boat with a spinnaker. Sail team members Scott Stanton '06, Andrew McInnes '06, Brad Winslett '08 and Nick Moraski '07 traveled with Coach Gerard Coleman for the competition, but all are quick to claim the victory for the entire sailing team. Aggie Crowned Miss Black Houston
Itang Young '06, a junior industrial distribution engineering major at Texas A&M University, has been crowned Miss Black Houston 2004-2005. The pageant, in its twentieth year, aids winners and runners-up in post-secondary scholastic funding. As Miss Black Houston, Young said she will stress the importance of higher education among young black women. "I will let them know that knowledge is power, and that it is one of those abstract objects that no person can take away from you."
