On November 15, President George W. Bush announced that Dr. Norman Borlaug, a distinguished professor of international agriculture at Texas A&M, would receive the National Medal of Science - the highest honor given to scientists in the United States. Borlaug's talent for agricultural development along with his keen awareness of societal ailments in Third World countries have brought him many honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for developing high-yielding wheat varieties that helped feed the world. "We are fortunate, indeed, to have him on our faculty and look forward to having the university continue to benefit from his vital work and its highly positive worldwide impact," said Texas A&M University President Dr. Robert M. Torbush Dismissed as A&M's Defensive Coordinator
Texas A&M head football coach Dennis Franchione announced on November 28 that he had dismissed defensive coordinator Carl Torbush. "After evaluating our defense, I felt like it was in the best interest of our football program to make a change at defensive coordinator," said Franchione. "I think Carl is an outstanding person and an excellent coach, but for whatever reason, we were not effective on defense." A&M's defense was ranked 108th out of 117 Division I-A schools and featured a pass defense that was the worst in the nation. Franchione said a national search for a replacement would begin immediately. For more, go to http://www.aggieathletics.com/pressRelease.php?PRID=10574.
