News from Texas A&M University
Texas A&M to Launch New Ad Campaign
This fall, Texas A&M University will launch a new ad campaign that focuses on showcasing the school's core values to the public. Titled "Welcome to Aggieland," the campaign looks to portray the unique culture of Texas A&M and appeal to prospective students who share its ideals. The effort attempts to break away from typical higher education ads and will instead aim to evoke genuine emotions of what sets Texas A&M apart from other universities-the traits of leadership, excellence, integrity, loyalty, selfless service and welcoming. While not overtly emphasizing education, the media spots will convey a newly proclaimed mission of the university to develop leaders of character who are dedicated to serving the greater good. Washington Monthly Ranks Texas A&M Fifth in Nation
In their latest issue, Washington Monthly magazine listed Texas A&M University at No. 5 in its annual rankings of the best colleges and universities in the United States. The publication considered several variables in its ratings, including research activity and spending, doctorates awarded in engineering and the sciences, community service work and overall excellence. "Unlike other college guides ... this guide asks not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country," say the editors. "Are they, in short, doing well by doing good?" Ranked ahead of Texas A&M was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at No. 1, followed by the University of California-Berkeley, Penn State University and UCLA. Texas A&M was the highest ranked university in the Southwest and the only university in Texas ranked in the top 15. Nearly 2,000 Grads Honored at August Commencement
Almost 2,000 Texas A&M students received degrees at two separate commencement ceremonies on Aug. 11 at Reed Arena. Twenty of the graduates, all members of the Corps of Cadets, were commissioned into the military. Texas A&M University System Board of Regents Chairman John D. White '70 and Distinguished Professor James E. Womack served as the commencement speakers. "Only 27 percent of United States citizens have a college degree," said White. "That means 73 percent of your fellow Americans have not achieved what you are achieving today." For more on this story, go to http://www.tamu.edu/tamunews/News/stories/06/081506news-12.html.

Zahin Memorial Playground Dedicated
On Aug. 1, the Lamiya Zahin Memorial Park, a playground next to the University Apartments Community Center, was dedicated by the Texas A&M University community. Lamiya, the four-year-old daughter of graduate students Saquib Ejaz and his wife, Lufthansa Kanta, died Aug. 2, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in a tragic fire and explosion at the apartments. Her paternal grandmother, Rabeya Chaudhury, was also injured in the fire and died on Sept. 6. "The playground will be a living tribute to a life of promise ended all too soon - and in a place half a world away from Lamiya's ancestral home," said Texas A&M University President Robert M. Gates in a statement read at the dedication. The memorial marker features butterflies, a favorite of Lamiya's, and a bronze plaque displaying her picture.
