Candlelight Memorial Service Held at University Apartments
Residents of the University Apartments were joined by Texas A&M University
officials, faculty, staff and students on August 2 to light candles and place
flowers in a student-led remembrance of Lamiya Zahin and her paternal
grandmother, Rabeya Chaudhury. Lamiya, the four-year-old daughter of graduate
students Saquib Ejaz and his wife Lufthansa Kanta, and her grandmother died
August 2 and September 6, 2004, respectively, as a result of injuries sustained
in the University Apartments fire and explosion that occurred on July 31. Dr.
Robert M. Gates, Texas A&M president, noted that when tragedy touches any
member of the Aggie family, it touches all and though words cannot take away
grief, they can represent ideas. After thanking all those in the campus and
local communities who have helped in the year since the tragedy, Gates
announced that University Apartments residents and various student groups have
begun work on a proposal to create a memorial park adjacent to a playground
near the community center. For more on this story, go to http://our-news.tamu.edu/newsmanager/templates/?a=661&z=15.
