It is a record year for the Big Event,
as the student-run service project will boast more jobs and
volunteers than ever before at this year’s event on Saturday, March
29.
Big Event organizers expect to complete
1,100 jobs with the help of 10,000 student volunteers. It is a feat
that could not happen without assistance from The Association of
Former Students, said Big Event Assistant Director Krista Johnson
’08.
“The Association helps so much with
our print needs,” Johnson said. Without The Association’s help,
Big Event’s copy bill would be upwards of several thousand dollars.
“We have huge print needs from our job request forms to our
participant forms. They (The Association) basically print all of this
for us for free.”
The help allows the group to focus on
the yearlong planning of the project meant to thank the Bryan and
College Station communities for supporting Texas A&M students
throughout the school year, Johnson said.
The 26-year annual event is the largest
student-run community service project in the nation. There are about
100 similar programs at other college campuses, and 70 of those
programs can trace their roots back to A&M’s Big Event.
