Robert Womack(1923 - 2013)
Womack, Robert Entered into rest Friday morning [November 15, 2013] surrounded by his family. He was born in Terrell, TX on August 4, 1923 to Alma Morris and Robert L Womack Sr. Bob grew up in East Dallas, TX, attended Lipscomb Elementary, Long Jr High, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School with the class of 1941. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University becoming a life-long Aggie! He also followed his father's footsteps to the Love Field Lodge being a Master Mason for more than 50 years. Bob's college career was interrupted by WWII when his class at A&M was activated to serve their country. Commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the 86th "Blackhawk" Division, 342nd Infantry, Company F, Robert saw action in Europe in the Battle of the Bulge, the Ruhr Pocket, and Austria. When the war in Europe was over, the "86th" was re-deployed to the Pacific theater, arriving in the Philippines and Corregidor Island for the post-war occupation. While in the Philippines, Bob and his best buddy, Benton Walker, helped to organize the 1946 Aggie Muster at Malinta Tunnel on Corregidor Island. Aggie Servicemen came from all over the Pacific Theater to attend this muster! After the War, Bob mustered out of the Army as a Captain, and returned to TAMU, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then married his life-long love, Margaret Alkire Womack of Ennis Texas who preceded him in death in 1999. May 1948 also saw the beginning of Bob's long and successful career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. In his own words, Bob "wire-chiefed" all over north Texas. Son Robert III was born in Tyler in 1949. Daughter Nancy was born in Waxahachie in 1951. The family moved from Dallas to St. Louis, MO, to Houston TX in 1954, and Houston was home for the next 30 years. A licensed professional engineer, Bob put his engineering degree to work serving SWBT Houston Area as District Plant Superintendent and District Engineer until 1984 when he returned to Dallas. While living in Houston, Bob also served the community through, first Kiwanis Club, and later, Rotary International. He was President of the Sharpstown Rotary Club in the 1960s. He was active in the International Right-of-Way Association. He was President of the Briarmeadow Civic Club. Bob and Margaret were also active members of Houston's Second Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, and he served as a Deacon. Bob and Margaret returned to Dallas in 1984 on a SWBT transfer, finally retiring from Bell in 1986. During retirement, Bob slowed down not at all. He became an active contributor in the Park Cities Rotary Club, and the Greater Dallas Rotary Chorus. It was his pleasure to perform with the chorus in the Fabulous Senior Follies. He also became the "greatest G-Daddy" in the world, becoming grandfather (real and surrogate) to Michael, Michelle, Melissa, Juliet, Karen, Jamal, and Buie. Bob has been a devoted member and Deacon at Royal Lane Baptist Church in Dallas, where he treasured his church family. Bob Womack is the sum total of so many descriptors - Christian, Patriot, Soldier, Mason, loyal friend, devoted son, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Robert Womack is survived by his son, Robert L Womack III and Deanna Fullerton Womack of Acworth, Georgia; daughter, Nancy Womack Holland (Mrs. Charles) of Terrell, TX; grandchildren, Juliet M and Karen M Womack of Acworth Georgia, Melissa Holland Jones and husband, Travis of Austin TX, Michelle Holland Recker and husband, Tom of McKinney TX, and Michael C Holland and wife, Heather of Lake Charles LA; and great grandchildren, Lee and Jacqueline Recker, Jackson Jones, and McKayla and Murray Holland.
