Roland Lee Bomberger passed away on October 26th, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. Roland was born on November 4th, 1934 to Edna Coppinger Bomberger and Roland Emanuel Bomberger in Dallas, Texas. He was the apple of his mother's eye and the spoiled nephew of Woodrow and Lillian Yeager. Roland was an only child raised in the depression days of the late 30's in Cement City. Born into a German family with deep historical roots (distant relatives arrived in the U.S. in the 1700's and purchased land from William Penn) he grew up a true Texan. He attended Crozier Technical High School in downtown Dallas and had to catch several trolley cars just to get to class. He graduated in 1952 and was accepted into Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. A member of the Corps, he worked diligently to earn His Senior Boots graduating in the Spring of 1956. Upon graduation, Roland enlisted into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. He finished his Army career in 1963 as a First Lieutenant. Returning to Dallas, he met his future wife, DeLois Tilley, on a blind date. They married in June of 1964 and settled in Dallas. As a salesman for the House of Seagrams, he had the opportunity to move to Tampa, Florida. While there, the family grew with the addition of Matthew and Christopher. As he progressed up through the sales ranks, the opportunity to move to South Carolina helped expand the family again with the addition of Andrew. A change in career brought the family back to Dallas where Joshua was born. Shortly after the birth of his fourth son, the family moved to Athens, Texas to run a Montgomery Ward franchise in downtown Athens. In 1982 the Bombergers moved to Cedar Creek Lake. In 1995, he retired from the Kaufman County Appraisal District as the Deputy Chief Appraiser.
Roland was a devoted Christian and family man. His faith was strong with a belief that all who ask for Christ to come into their hearts will be saved. A member of the Episcopal Church for over 40 years, he was active in Cursillo, Kairos Prison Ministry and provided meals to the needy around Cedar Creek Lake. He led a life of service to others and had a deep love for the Church. He was never accused of being a 2 percenter and had a lifelong love for his beloved Texas Aggies.
Roland is preceded into heaven by his mother Edna, father Roland, Uncle Woody, Aunt Lillian and Aunt Cora. He also follows cousins Doug Coppinger and Ted Ray Vowels, and his childhood running buddy - Glenn Northcutt. Roland leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, DeLois, his sons and daughter in laws- Matt and Jenifer, Chris and Maggie, Andy and Brooke, and Josh and Nina. He had 7 loving grandchildren- Alexandra, Grant, Bethany, Skylar, Josh, Lilly and Austin.
The memorial service will be held at St. James on the Lake Episcopal Church in Kemp, Texas on November 2nd at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to: Mary Crowley Cancer Research (www.marycrowley.org) or Kairos Prison Ministry (www.kairosprisonministry.org).
